MapItAll Help
Index
Operation
MapItAll can be used by manually entering coordinates or by using a MapItAll tooltip. The tooltip requires
installation of the MapItAll Enhancements Script as detailed below. MapItAll
accepts coordinates in the following formats:
- WGS-84 Datum: hddd°mm.mmm, hddd°mm'ss.s", hddd.dddddd and ddd.ddddddd
- OSGB Datum: British Grid and Numeric British Grid
- UK Postcode
MapItAll will only display the maps that are available at the specified coordinates. For example if a
location in Jersey is entered only the Bing and Google maps will be displayed. The currently displayed map
is changed by moving the mouse pointer over the name of the required map. Additionally locations can be
opened in Google Earth or Memory Map by clicking on the Open KML File or Open GPX File buttons.
The top line of buttons on the MapItAll page provide the following functionality:
- Zoom In All
Zooms in all maps at the current
location.
- Zoom Out All
Zooms out all maps at the current
location.
- Align Maps / Unalign Maps
Shifts each map so the
center of each map is in the same position on the screen. Select again to go back to the default setting
of unaligned maps.
- Coordinates
Displays a list of alternative
coordinate formats for the current location.
- Map Links
Displays a list of links to each mapping
website.
- Options
Configures the operation of MapItAll. See
the Options section below for more details.
Options
MapItAll can be configured to your prefered method of operation by selecting the Options button on
any MapItAll page.
The options page is broken down into two sets of options. The first set control the operation of the
MapItAll page itself and the second set controls the operation of the tooltip. Note that tooltip options
will only be available if you install the
MapItAll Enhancements script
detailed below.
MapItAll Options
- Initial zoom level
Sets the initial zoom level of
the maps when MapItAll is opened. The smaller the number the higher the zoom level (giving a more detailed
view). For example a value of 5 will give a Magic map scale of about 1:5700 and a value of 10 will give a
scale of about 1:180,000.
- Initial Map to display
Selects the map that will be
intially displayed when MapItAll is opened.
- Enable checkboxes
Controls whether the specified
map selection tab is displayed when MapItAll is opened.
- Initial Woodland Trust/Bing Map/Google map type
If
the corresponding map is enabled this specifies the type of map that should be displayed when MapItAll is
opened.
- Automatically open Google Earth / Memory Map
Controls whether Google Earth and/or Memory Map is opened (or updated if already open) automatically for
each coordinate lookup. If the location came from a geocaching.com cache page the marker will be named
with the GC code and name of the relevant cache. If the location came from any other page then the marker
will use the coordinates as the name. The marker has a link back to the original web page that the
location came from (e.g. the relevant geocaching.com page for locations from a cache page).
- Map selection delay
Sets the delay between
selecting a map and it being displayed. This value is intended to stop the display switching to a map
immediately when the pointer is passed over a map selection tab when all you wanted to do was change the
current zoom level or view Map Links (for example).
Tooltip Options
- Show Tooltip
These options specify when the
MapItAll tooltip will appear. By default the trigger for the appearance of the tooltip is to move the
mouse pointer over some coordinates that are in the standard hddd°mm.mmm format. The tooltip can also be
triggered by highlighting some text and pressing the 'm' key. This can be useful in passing other
coordinate formats (such as postcodes, OSGB, decimal lat long etc.) to MapItAll for it to try and decode.
Additionally the tooltip can be triggered by mouse clicks (left or right) or directly after making a text
selection.
- Enable Tooltip For
Selects whether the tooltip is
operational only on geocaching.com pages or on all webpages.
- Tooltip Position
Configures where the tooltip will
appear relative to the mouse pointer. The default is for the tooltip to appear above and to the left of
the mouse pointer.
- MapItAll Instances
Selects whether Single or
Multiple instances of MapItAll will be opened and whether they will appear in Windows or Tabs. When a
Single instance is selected any uses of the MapItAll tooltip after the first use will update the maps in
this single window or tab.
- MapItAll Provider
Selects which MapItAll host
called from the tooltip. This should normally be left as 'Auto' and will show the current website that the
tooltip will use. If you find MapItAll not working on either benchmarks.org.uk of follow-the-arrow.co.uk
just open MapItAll on the other working website and then use the tooltip on geocaching.com as normal. All
uses of the tooltip will be directed to the working MapItAll website. The 'Other' option is used for
development of MapItAll.
MapItAll Enhancements Script
This Tampermonkey (Greasemonkey) user script adds the following functionality to MapItAll:
- Adds a MapItAll tooltip to coordinates or user selected text on geocaching.com or optionally on
all web pages. The tooltip appears when the mouse pointer is moved over any standard hddd°mm.mmm format
coordinates. Clicking on the link in the tooltip will open MapItAll. The operation of the tooltip is
configurable via any MapItAll page via the MapItAll Options button.
- Adds extra options to the options available on a MapItAll page to control the operation of the
tooltip.
- Enables MapItAll to open and control externally provided maps.
- Enables MapItAll to add and position location markers on maps that don't natively have markers.
To install the MapItAll Enhancements script click here.
Firefox Setting to allow the MapItall Tooltip to open a single instance of MapItAll
Firefox version 109 onwards includes Enhanced Tracking Protection. By default this inhibits the
MapItall Tooltip from opening a single instance of MapItAll. Therefore to allow this to work the Enhanced
Tracking Protection needs to be relaxed for geocaching.com (and any other website you may want to use the
tooltip on).
To allow the a single instance of MapItAll to be opened from geocaching.com follow these
instructions:
- In Firefox go to Settings (under the three horizontal lines at the top right)
- Click 'Privacy & Security' on the left
- In the 'Enhanced Tracking Protection' section click 'Manage Exceptions...'
- In the 'Address of web site' box enter https://www.geocaching.com/
- Click 'Add Exception'
- Click 'Save Changes'
Firefox Add-ons
Tampermonkey
Tampermonkey is a replacement add-on for the Greasemonkey add-on which was originally used. This add-on is
required to enable the MapItAll Enhancements Script to run. The add-on can be downloaded from here: Tampermonkey
Add-on
Ignore X-Frame-Options Header
The PastMap, Ordnance Survey Ireland, Woodland Trust and DataMapWales maps do not normally allow themselves
to be embedded in another website. This restriction can be overidden by installing the snappily named
'Ignore X-Frame-Options Header' add-on. Note that if you are not interested in any of the above mentioned
maps then this add-on does not need to be installed. The add-on can be downloaded from here: Ignore
X-Frame-Options Header Add-on
Problems?
MapItall Tooltip opens multiple instances of MapItAll
If this occurs when you've selected the option to only open single instance of MapItAll then follow the
instructions above to fix this.
Woodland Trust map problem
The WT map sometimes doesn't show the boundary of a woodland area. A pin indicates the woodland area
but the orange boundary may not automatically load. If this happens then you'll need to zoom in and out
using the Woodland Trust map controls to get the boundary to load and display.
MapItAll not working as expected
Try the following:
- Close all instances of Firefox and try again.
- Open MapItAll and update the browser's cache by doing a CTRL F5 and try again.
- Open MapItAll and click on the Options button. Check that is says the MapItAll Enhancements script
is 'Up to Date'. If not update it and try again.
- If all the above fail then please email me.
